The Broad Museum

Broad Museum

Interested in checking out The Broad Museum, one of the most talked about contemporary art museums in California? Did we say the museum is FREE? All you have to do is make an online reservation for sometime in the future and show up on the appointed date and time. That’s it!

It’s a great day trip idea if you’re visiting San Diego or just want to get out of town.

Here’s what to do. Hop on an Amtrak train and travel 2 hours from the Solana Beach Station (you can park your car there) book the Pacific Surfliner to LA’s beautiful and centrally located Union Station.

Union Station, built in 1939, hearkens back to a time when travel by rail was more stylish. This grand train station is beautiful and is worth taking the time to look around. It  features vaulted ceilings, large chandeliers, Arts & Crafts-era armchairs, and Moorish arches. You can either walk to The Broad Museum (about 25 minutes) or take a Metro car to Civic Center / Grand Park Station (Purple or Red Line) located at First and Hill Streets. The museum is just a 0.4 mile walk from the station.

The Broad Museum is located across the street from Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA)  and is adjacent to Disney Hall, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion (former home of the Academy Awards, and Grand Park which stretches from The Music Center on the west to City Hall on the east between First and Temple streets.

We’d recommend arriving at The Broad Museum before lunch so you can enjoy the museum’s two floors of exhibition space and then venture off into Downtown Los Angeles (DTLA) for some food and drink.

Grand Central Market is LA’s historic food pavilion (in operation since 1917) which is located at the foot of the historic and no longer functioning funicular, Angel’s Flight. Whatever kind of food or drink you want is available at this recently renovated bustling market of purveyors. If that’s not your scene then there’s plenty of eats and drinks to be found in the nearby Arts District, and of course, Little Tokyo.
