San Diego’s French Garden Shoppe

French Garden Shoppe in San Diego

Shopping in San Diego doesn’t mean just going to malls to find good deals. Deals can be found in many of San Diego’s older neighborhoods including, the pedestrian-friendly, Little Italy.

San Diegans’ love of the outdoors, combined with near-perfect weather, makes for informal and casual interior decoration across the county. Some say that San Diego’s semi-arid climate is similar to the Provence region of France. Keeping this in mind, Eugene Marley opened the first The French Garden Shoppe in Mission Hills catering to area residents who wanted to bring the beauty of French home and garden furnishing into their residences. The best little secret in Mission Hills soon began to attract the attention of people outside the neighborhood.

For many years, this local source for European imports and casual elegant furnishings came out of a jam-packed storefront on Goldfinch between Washington and University. The French Garden Shoppe catered to both designers’ and consumers’ growing interest in French textiles, pottery, glassware, table-settings, bath products, as well as unique kitchen and garden decor.

After years of operating in close quarters, Eugene decided to open a second storefront in Little Italy. After what seemed like an impossibly long time, the second store was constructed with both beauty and utility in mind. It was much larger than the original location and parking was no longer such a challenge. However, operating both stores as the domestic economy began to spiral down was too much risk for Eugene to handle. He decided to cut his losses and close the Mission Hills store. Now, all the finds would be located in the Little Italy store and the shoppe would be open daily.

The result? It is a beautiful store that is laid out with both price and style in mind. Every day, there are new sale items to be found. In fact, a great deal of The French Garden Shoppe’s inventory is marked 50% off the original price. There are some really wonderful deals on items for the kitchen, the living room, the garden, bathrooms, and for personal use. European imports are plentiful and most importantly, the staff is knowledgeable. Don’t hesitate to ask them for advice – they are more than willing to help you select the right item for you.

If you are looking for a unique place to purchase gifts, The French Garden Shoppe is a great place to wander around. They have a very large selection of cards for all occasions, and just like the rest of the store, they are stylish and unique. Gifts are wrapped free of charge, just be sure to ask for it. Best of all, the items are selected with style in mind and they cannot be found at Costco, Target, or other big box stores.

Yours truly cannot think of a more perfect day than to visit Little Italy for its Saturday Mercato (Farmer’s Market) and then drive over to The French Garden Shoppe to find some unique finds at 50% off. Now, that’s what I call retail therapy!
